Nature Play

Nature play in our Kookaburra Bush Preschool involves creating an environment where children can engage with nature in a hands-on and exploratory manner. It encourages unstructured and imaginative play that takes advantage of the natural surroundings. Here are some of our nature play activities and environments we have incorporated into our Kookaburra Bush Preschool:

1. Natural Play Spaces:

  • Our outdoor play areas made from natural materials like logs, stones, and tree stumps to create climbing structures, stepping stones, and balance beams.
  • Incorporated sand and mud pits for tactile experiences and messy play.

  • We have sensory stations with items like leaves, pinecones, rocks, and feathers, allowing children to touch, smell, and explore various textures.
  • Nature-based art stations with materials like twigs, leaves, and flowers for children to create their own masterpieces.

3. Wildlife Observation:

  • Provide binoculars and magnifying glasses for children to observe insects, birds, and other wildlife.
  • The Children get to experience being close to wildlife during our daily Bush Walks.

4. Imaginative Play:

  • We provide open-ended materials like sticks, leaves, and pine needles for children to create their own imaginative play scenarios, such as building forts or fairy houses.
  • Role-playing with nature-themed props like flower crowns, animal masks, and butterfly wings.

5. Gardening and Planting:thumbnail_IMG_4023

  • Our small garden herb and vegetable garden allows children to witness the growth of plants and vegetables firsthand.
  • Teach them about the lifecycle of plants and the importance of caring for the environment.

6. Nature Storytelling:

  • We have a special spot in the bush preschool where children can gather for storytelling sessions, using nature-themed books or sharing stories about the outdoors.

7. Campfire:

  • Supervised campfire experiences introduce children to basic outdoor fire starting skills.

8. Nature Journals:

  • During our Bush Walks the Children are encouraged to journal all of their experiences.

9. Nature Walks and Exploration:

  • We have daily guided nature walk on our Bush Track where children can explore different parts of the surrounding environment, learning about local flora and fauna.
  • This encourages them to use their senses to explore and engage with their surroundings.thumbnail_IMG_5076

By creating a nature-rich environment that encourages exploration, discovery, and creativity, you can foster a deep connection between young children and the natural world.
