What is a Bush Kindy?
A “bush kindy” is a term primarily used in Australia to refer to a form of early childhood education that takes place in natural outdoor settings, typically in bushland or natural environments. It is inspired by the Scandinavian concept of “forest kindergartens” or “nature kindergartens.”
In a bush kindy, young children, usually between the ages of 3 and 5, spend their learning time outdoors in nature, engaging in play-based activities and exploring the natural environment. The focus is on experiential learning, where children can develop their physical, cognitive, social, and emotional skills through hands-on experiences in nature.
Children in bush kindy programs often engage in activities such as building shelters, climbing trees, collecting natural materials, observing plants and animals, playing in streams or mud, and participating in group games and storytelling. The activities are designed to foster a deep connection with nature, encourage imaginative play, and develop skills such as problem-solving, creativity, teamwork, and resilience.
Bush kindy programs prioritise child-led learning, where children have the freedom to explore and make choices based on their interests and curiosity. Trained educators or facilitators provide guidance, supervision, and support while encouraging children’s independence and fostering a sense of wonder and appreciation for the natural world.
The bush kindy approach recognises the benefits of outdoor play and nature immersion for children’s holistic development. It promotes a sense of environmental stewardship, encourages physical activity and healthy risk-taking, and nurtures a love for nature from an early age.
